The National Flag

It has five colors: red, green, black, yellow, and white. The colors represent:

red – secular resistance to colonialism, the armed struggle for national liberation and the defense of sovereignty;
green – the riches of the soil;
•  black – the African continent;
• golden yellow – the riches of the subsoil;
white – the justness of the struggle of the Mozambican people and peace.

From top to bottom, the colors green, black and golden yellow are horizontally arranged alternating with white bands. On the left side, red occupies the triangle in the center of which is a star, with a book on it that is superimposed on a crossed gun and hoe.

The star symbolizes the spirit of international solidarity of the Mozambican people. The book, the hoe and the gun symbolize study, production and defense.

Emblem

The central elements are a book, a rifle and a hoe, arranged above a map of Mozambique, representing education, defence and surveillance, farmers and agricultural production, respectively.

Below the map one can see the ocean. In the centre is the rising sun, symbolising new life being born.

Around it is a cogwheel, symbolising workers and industry. Around the cogwheel, to the right and left, can be seen a corn plant and an ear of sugar cane, symbolising agricultural wealth.

Above, in the centre, a star symbolises the Mozambican people’s spirit of international solidarity. At the bottom, a red banner reads “Republic of Mozambique”.
